End the delay to Hampshire and the Isle of Wight getting Mayoral powers and funding

The Prime Minister’s announcements about extra powers and improved funding are good news – but Hampshire and the Isle of Wight need more.

A big disappointment is that the PM hasn’t said anything about the timing of our Mayoral election which seems still to be delayed until 2028.

Hampshire and the Isle of Wight are losing out in terms of the money we get and what we can do because of that delay.

To Angela Rayner, Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government

When the Prime Minister announced new powers for Mayors on July 30, you said: "We need every region to be firing on all cylinders if we want good growth in every postcode, and we will do everything in our power to make that a reality."

Hampshire and the Isle of Wight won't be firing on all cylinders because of your predecessor's decision to delay the election of the Mayor of Hampshire and the Solent until 2028. The region will miss out on millions of pounds of funding and Mayoral powers, and the good growth that can come from that, because of this decision.

Please bring forward the election of a Mayor for Hampshire and the Solent to May 2027 so that our region can have the growth, powers and funding we so urgently need.
