The power to fix our ferries
The Government is giving new powers and funding to Mayors to better plan transport - buses, trains and roads - or even new forms of transport like trams and metros. This could mean a better, more joined up system for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
But there’s a problem. The government has no plan to include ferries and, over the Solent and along our coast, they’re a vital part of our public transport system. And a lot needs improvement.

To the Prime Minister
On July 30, you said “Soon, every local leader will have the power and resources to improve public transport”. Here in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, ferries are a vital part of our transport system - but the Mayor and the new Combined Authority covering Hampshire and the Isle of Wight don’t have the powers and funding to improve them in the same way as other forms of transport.
We the undersigned call upon the Prime Minister to ensure that the Department for Transport and the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government work together to include ferries in the plans for devolution in the same way as all other forms of transport.
